Manganese, explained

Video lesson in production

Bhavya’s explainer for this element will play here.

Overview

Manganese ([Ar]3d5 4s2) can use any number of its seven valence electrons, giving it oxidation states from −3 to +7, the widest range of any element in the first transition row. The +2 state is the most stable in water, because Mn2+ keeps a half-filled d subshell; its salts are pale pink. Manganese dioxide (+4) is a brown-black solid used in batteries, and purple permanganate (+7) is a strong oxidizing agent used to treat water and to analyze iron.

The metal itself is hard and brittle, so it is almost never used on its own. About 90 percent of manganese goes into steel, where it removes oxygen and binds sulfur as manganese sulfide, preventing the steel from cracking when it is hot-rolled. Nearly every tonne of steel contains manganese. In living things, a cluster of four manganese atoms and one calcium atom in photosystem II splits water during photosynthesis, releasing the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere.

Discovery

Black manganese oxide was used as a pigment in prehistoric cave paintings and by ancient glassmakers to remove green tints from glass. In 1774 Carl Wilhelm Scheele recognized that the mineral pyrolusite contained a new element, and that same year his colleague Johan Gottlieb Gahn isolated impure manganese by heating the oxide with carbon. The name comes, through Italian, from magnesia, the Latin name for black minerals from the Magnesia region of Greece.

Where it’s found
The twelfth most abundant element in the crust, manganese is mined as oxide ores such as pyrolusite, mainly in South Africa, Gabon and Australia.
What it’s used for
  • Steelmaking
  • Alkaline battery cathodes
  • Aluminium drink cans
  • Water treatment
  • Fertilizers and animal feed
In living things
Manganese is an essential trace element: it activates enzymes such as manganese superoxide dismutase and arginase, and it is the heart of the water-splitting center in plant photosynthesis. Too much inhaled manganese damages the nervous system.
Safety
Long-term inhalation of manganese dust or welding fumes can cause manganism, a Parkinson-like brain disorder. Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer that can ignite organic materials.

Signature reactions

The chemistry Manganese is known for.

  1. Catalysis · Decomposition

    Catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide

A pinch of black manganese dioxide makes hydrogen peroxide fizz vigorously as oxygen is released, while the MnO2 is left unchanged. It is a common school method for producing oxygen and a textbook example of heterogeneous catalysis.

    2H2O2(aq)2H2O(l)+O2(g)

    Conditions: MnO2 catalyst, room temperature

  2. Redox · Analytical

    Permanganate titration of iron(II)

Purple permanganate is reduced to nearly colorless Mn2+ as it oxidizes iron(II). The first lasting pink tint signals the end point, so permanganate acts as its own indicator in iron analysis.

    MnO4−(aq)+5Fe2+(aq)+8H+(aq)Mn2+(aq)+5Fe3+(aq)+4H2O(l)

Conditions: acidified with dilute sulfuric acid

  3. Redox · Electrochemistry

    Alkaline battery discharge

In an alkaline cell, zinc is oxidized at the anode while manganese dioxide is reduced from +4 to +3 at the cathode, giving about 1.5 volts. Billions of AA and AAA batteries a year rely on this reaction.

    Zn(s)+2MnO2(s)+H2O(l)ZnO(s)+2MnO(OH)(s)

    Conditions: potassium hydroxide electrolyte
